Resuming In-Person Worship!

Trinity-Episcopal-New-Services.png

Dear Trinity Family!

I’m so excited as I write to you… I can hardly wait to "open the church” on September 12th. We will come together in one service at 10:30 a.m. to worship inside in our sacred space! It’s been 18 months since many of you have been in the church for a worship service and I have yet to celebrate a full service in the church so yes! - I’m beaming with joy and counting the days! I would like to encourage each of you to attend as it’s going to be an exciting day at Trinity and a great opportunity to bring a friend. Here is what you can expect:

· We will have an Easter like service with a full liturgy, including music (full choir and brass quartet) at 10:30 a.m. in the church. I know that some of you may be a little nervous moving back inside, but rest assured we will have an option for everyone. For those who feel more comfortable worshiping outside we will open the doors of the church so that folks can fully participate in the courtyard (speaker outside so everyone can hear).

· After the service we will have a coffee hour like no other. I’m encouraging everyone to bring something to share as we gather in the courtyard for fellowship.

· In addition, we will have our Ministry Fair in the courtyard highlighting the many wonderful opportunities to get involved at Trinity this year. I ask you to begin praying now about your important role in the joy of serving in one of these ministries… We all have a part to play in making Trinity a wonderful place.

· FOR THE KIDS. The Vogels have generously offered to provide a bounce house for the day, so get ready to have some fun!

Grace and Peace to you as we come to God with Open Hands – ready to give and ready to receive.

New Music Director - Dan Miller

Dan Miller, our wonderful organist, who was hired just as I came to Trinity, has asked if he could be considered for the position of Director of Music. We have had several conversations over the past four months and we agreed to talk more in detail after Easter. Last week I met with Dan and shared with him all the wonderful emails, notes, and phone calls I have received regarding his service to us the past four months as our interim… Easter being the icing on the cake! I couldn’t believe what he was able to accomplish in our outside and virtual service. I knew Dan was a musical genius with 40+ years of experience and many degrees to prove it. Dan holds a Bachelor of Music Education, a Masters in Church music (Organ Emphasis), and a Masters in Collaborative Piano. To say that he is qualified is an understatement and we are very blessed to have him. Dan, welcome to your new role as Director of Music and Organist!

I would encourage you all to reach out to him, welcome him to the staff and to our church family, and to support his ministry at Trinity. If you’d like to get to know him better, please enjoy this wonderful interview about his history and his experience with us.

Please Follow Guidelines for Attending In-Person Worship

In an effort to maintain a safe place of worship, please follow the guidelines below and call the church office to let us know you are planning on attending. The Bishop is very clear on the criteria to allow this gathering. Please dress casually and warm, we will have heaters spread throughout. Everyone MUST wear a mask, NO EXCEPTIONS.

  1. We will provide one way in and one way out of the worship space.

  2. We will have printed bulletins to hand out and ask that you take them home to read and dispose of them at home.

  3. We ask you to bring your own masks, hand sanitizers, chairs or blankets for worship services (we will have a few masks and a hand sanitizer station available)

  4. We MUST practice social distancing, please stay in your "worship pods".

  5. We encourage you to use the restrooms at home and only use the bathroom in Cox Hall for emergencies.

  6. We will not pass a plate during the service but we will provide a basket at the entrance and exit for your gifts and pledge offerings. You can also give easily touch-free online or via text.

  7. Finally we ask that you do not linger for fellowship and leave the church grounds immediately after the service.

We can make this work but we need everyone to do their part.

Please join us! We can’t wait to see you all!

Ash Wednesday Services

When:
Wednesday February 17
Time:
6am Online Service (available for replay)
1pm Courtyard Service

We will be doing a virtual Ash Wednesday service that will go live at 6am (so that you can listen anytime on Ash Wednesday). This will be posted to our Facebook page, our website, and also to our YouTube channel. If you are on our email list, you'll get a reminder sent straight to your inbox.

***UPDATE*** We are now cleared to have in-person worship again! This means we'll be having a full service in our courtyard for Ash Wednesday which will begin at 12pm (noon). If you are able, we hope to see you there. The Bishop is very clear on the criteria to allow this gathering. Please dress casually and warm, we will have heaters spread throughout. Everyone MUST wear a mask, NO EXCEPTIONS.

Our Bishop has asked that we not impose ashes this year but has said that you are free to impose ashes on yourself. With that said I will have ashes from last year’s palms blessed and ready for you to pick up next Wednesday February 10. They will be in a box just in front of the church office.

As we get ready for Lent, let’s begin to prepare our hearts and minds for the season of "giving up". My prayer for you all is that you would find time to be still, quiet, and mindful as you invoke this prayer: Free me, Lord Jesus, from anything that obstructs my way to you. Clear away the clutter of petty grudges. Remove smudges of resentment and bitterness. Cleanse me of thoughts filled with anger, envy, or self-pity… Create space in my life for more kindness and less spitefulness, greater generosity, few self-centered needs, stronger compassion and weakened judgment of others… Enlarge my heart with a spirit of gratitude this Lent, so that I recognize the simple gifts that lay in abundance all around me…

Drive-In Worship

Drive-In-Worship-at-Trinity.jpg

- Please note -
Drive In Worship for Sunday February 7, 2021 has been cancelled due to inclement weather. We’ll start up again next week on Sunday February 14!

As we continue to adapt to changing guidelines regarding in-person gatherings, we have some exciting news for worship options. Starting this week we will begin “drive-in church" (kind of like a drive-in movie, but better)!

When:
Sundays at 10am

Where:
Courtyard Parking Area

You will simply pull into the church parking lot facing the front garden, tune your radio station to FM 102.1 and enjoy the service from the warmth of your car. The musicians will be in the church singing our favorite hymns and anthems, and Rev. Jonathan will be standing out front leading the service just in front of the visitors parking spots and you will be singing and participating in the service from the warmth and safety of your car.

In order to follow along, we encourage you to download the worship booklet with liturgy and bring it with you. Feel free to print from home, or simply download to your mobile device to read on the go! If you forget your printed copy, not to worry. We’ll guide you along the way. You can find the weekly bulletin each week here: https://trinityupperville.org/worshipbooklet

It’s sure to be an uplifting experience to be able to gather together so bring a warm drink, a spirit to worship and a heart filled with hope.

Further questions, call Laurie Volk or Betsy Crenshaw.

Christmas at Trinity 2020

As we continue to monitor the weather we have decided to switch up the Christmas Eve plans. The weather coming in is going to be nasty and rainy all day long so here is what we will do:

Christmas Eve 12/24/20 - The Holy Eucharist and Blessings will be distributed from 2-4pm in the church. Please don't all come at 2 but plan to space your selves out across the 2-hour window. We will have an Usher at the door giving you instructions on how to come in, receive, and exit.

Christmas Eve Virtual Service with music 12/24/20 - will go live at 5 pm. You will receive an email direct to your inbox at 5 pm (if you're on our list. DM us your email address if you'd like to be added). You can also find the service on our website, Facebook, and Youtube.

Trinity Kids Christmas Eve Service 12/24/20 - will also go live at 5 pm. You will receive an email direct to your inbox at 5 pm. You can also find the service on our website, Facebook, and Youtube.

First Sunday of Christmas 12/27/20 - We will celebrate the first Sunday of Christmas at 10 am with our Children's Christmas Pageant. If your children are in the performance (or would like to be) have them at the church no later than 9:30am so they can line up and be ready to go. We will also distribute Communion after the pageant at the front doors of the church (instruction given during the service).

I look forward to seeing you all at these different options! This may not be the Christmas Eve we wanted but it's certainly the one we need. I hope you all feel blessed by the offerings and know that I am praying for you tonight. If you need me don't hesitate to call or email me.

Grace, Peace, and Merry Christmas!
Jonathan

Music Notes from Christian

For the first time ever, in the ninth month of a year that starts with 20, I will not publish on these pages a list of Trinity's choirs complete with dates and times that rehearsals will begin for the Fall. As the safety of singing in groups is still in serious question, our choirs for all ages will continue to be on hold indefinitely. As difficult as that is to put in print and as much as we all miss the connection of meeting in person, I will instead take this opportunity to recognize some of the ways that worshiping via recorded video services has provided new forms of connection that may not be immediately apparent, beginning with the notion that each week, with the click of a button (and the patience of Job while uploading) our clergy, musicians, lay readers, and video editors, all in different places, come together in a shared Google Drive folder labeled Trinity to create these video services.

In much the same way that I was initially resistant to cell phones, email, and self checkout at the grocery store (actually still not sold on that one), I have slowly found that the medium of video services does offer some inspiring possibilities not easily accomplished in live worship. For example, just this past Sunday, we were able to incorporate an image of the Apostle Peter from one of the stained glass windows into the video of an anthem about Peter. Similarly, being able to record children's sermons in different locations has opened up many options not possible in the basement of the church.

Yet another silver lining of video services has been the ability to see my colleagues at other churches in action. Both musicians and clergy rarely get the opportunity to attend worship at other churches but now, along with everyone else, we can watch any number of services in any number of places at any number of times. The connections are endless and also work both ways, increasing our own expo-sure. Several of our recorded musical selections have been viewed thousands of times, far more than we could ever hope for in person. I expect we have all had the experience and joy of being able to watch our extended family's and friend's churches, and have them see ours, to an extent never before possible.

Being witness to so many services has also given me a renewed appreciation for our beautiful Episcopal liturgy. Dating back to Thomas Cranmer's original Book of Common Prayer, the Roman Rite before that, and even the pre-Christian Jewish tradition, the interconnectedness of our common worship is much more apparent when we can so easily see it in action in so many different places. From the lips of a retired Bishop with a British accent to a new Rector with a southern one, the same reassuring words of our liturgy, with their ancient origins and order, are repeated in many more accents and languages around the world. Whether it be in the back yard or on the computer screen, our liturgy connects us to the countless generations of Christians who have come both before and after us and, in the present, helps bind us all together in the body of Christ.

There is no doubt that a video service cannot replace the sense of family we have when worshiping together in person. But perhaps the immediate connections we are sacrificing are allowing for more far reaching ones. Just maybe, as Christians around the world attempt to squeeze the depth of our liturgy and the breadth of Jesus' love through the lens of a camera, it might give all of us the opportunity to see more clearly that our common prayer is far greater than our differences and that we can rejoice in the knowledge that our God is alive on Google Drive.
