About the Music:

Our service this Sunday begins with the Prelude:  Andante sostenuto  (Symphonie Gothique, Op. 70)  by Charles M. Widor and concludes with the Postlude:  Allegro maestoso  (Sonata II, Op. 65)  by  Felix Mendelssohn.

Hymn 541, Come Labor On, was written by Jane Laurie Borthwick in 1859 has references to the parable of the wheat and tares read at the Gospel.  It is set to the tune Ora Labora written by British born composer T. Tertius Noble who later served as organist of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in New York.

The Offertory Anthem, "We are Climbing Jacob's Ladder" is an African-American spiritual based on the story from Genesis which is read as the Old Testament lesson and subject of the sermon.  It was developed by american slaves from Liberia sometime between 1750-1825 and was one of the first African-American spirituals widely sung by white Christians.  This arrangement by Richard Walters is beautifully presented by tenor, Chip Connelly and pianist, Judy Connelly.
