Music Notes

German composer and pianist Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) was known for reviving interest in the music of J. S. Bach, notably for his performance of the St. Matthew Passion in 1829. His primary organ works are the SIx Sonatas, Op. 65 (1845). This week’s opening voluntary is the second movement of the first sonata, “Adagio”. His older sister, Fanny Mendelssohn (Hensel)(1805-1847), was a prolific composer whose works were largely unpublished in her lifetime. She was also praised for her piano technique, though she rarely played in public. She wrote the “Prelude in F Major” for organ to be played at her own wedding.

Sir Frecerick Arthur Gore Ouseley (1825-1889) is a neglected but fascinating character in nineteenth century church music. A precious child, at the age of five, he exclaimed “Only look, Papa blows his nose in G!” His short anthem “From the rising of the sun” has a hymn-like character and the words speak clearly to the listener. The text is from the Book of Malachi.
