Pentecost Sunday

Worship From Home

As we worship remotely during this time of social distancing, each week you’ll find Sundays at Home from Bishop Martin G. Townsend and members of Trinity Church. We will feature the full service recording, as well as the sermon and anthem on their own. You can also download PDFs of the Readings and Gospel, as well as the full sermon on our website.

This week we welcome the return of our organist, Richard McPherson, as he joins Christian in today's prelude. We thank Kelly Johnson for reading the lesson and the psalm. And we join Carolyn and Dave Park in offering the prayers. As always we are grateful to Christian Myers and our choristers for having recorded the anthem, Gloria and Sanctus just prior to Easter.

SUNDAY WORSHIP FOR MAY 31, 2020

Our celebration of the Holy Spirit begins with the "Chorale Variations on Veni Creator Spiritus" by 20th century French composer and organist, Maurice Durufle.  This 9th century hymn for Pentecost, and often sung at ordinations, uses an equally ancient tune based on Gregorian Chant.  The chant theme is first stated by the organ and then alternates between sung verses of the hymn (504 in our Hymnal 1982) and variations by the organ.

The Pentecost hymn, "Come Down O Love Divine" (516 in our Hymnal 1982),  is a prayer to the Holy Spirit sung to Ralph Vaughan Williams' magnificent tune, Down Ampney, which is named for the composer's birthplace in England.

Our anthem this Pentecost Sunday is "Ev'ry Time I Feel the Spirit" by American composer and choir director William Dawson who was a long time professor at the Tuskegee Institute and developed the Tuskegee Institute Choir into an internationally renowned ensemble.  Dawson's arrangements of spirituals have become standards of contemporary choral literature.
