Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), a Lutheran Cantor (music director) and organist in Leipzig, Germany, composed several cycles of cantatas for every Sunday of the church year. The cantata based on the Advent hymn, "Sleeper's wake! A voice astounds us" (Hymn 61) was written in 1731 covers the parable of the ten virgins in the Gospel of Matthew. This popular cantata uses three stanzas of the chorale. This week's Offertory is the fourth movement of the cantata which is based on the fourth movement, "Zion hears the watchmen singing", sung by the tenor soloist or group of tenors. Bach later transcribed this movement for organ, the version heard as this week's Prelude.
